We called for entries for Let's make a Wooden Zoo from early February to April 14, 2024, and we received a total of 135 submissions, with 166 drawings submitted.
After rigorous screening by sculptors Susumu Shingu and Shiko Miyake, 6 works were selected for actual productions and 17 works were selected as honorable mentions.
On Sunday May 26th, the finalists gathered for a meeting in WIND MUSEUM, Arimafuji Park. Each gave a presentation about his or her work and explained the thought that went into the work. Some of the animals were different from what we had expected, some unclear points were resolved, and it was a very enjoyable and new insightful experience.
One of the participants said,
“I can't wait to see my drawing turned into a wooden sculpture!”
"I want to see a chainsaw in real life!”
"I want it to be made like this!”
We could directly feel the imagination and power of the participants.
Let's enjoy the event!
A total of 135 people submitted 166 entries, of which 6 were actual works for production and 17 were selected for the Honorable Mention Award.
We were going to choose five works, but we ended up choosing six.
Susumu Shingu is making drawings from the pictures of selected drawings, and imagining how they will be made into three-dimensional works.
In order to turn the animals into wooden sculptures, we went to look for materials.
We went to a company called Sanda Chip Co., Ltd. that manufactures wood chips and other materials. The company kindly provided us with the materials.
The selected materials are stored in the studio of Shiko Miyake.
Looking at the materials, we are thinking about how to create the work.
(Using a chainsaw, we will make the shape. The rough cutting will begin around the middle of June.
)
Four of the six selected children and their parents were present. Left:Susumu Shingu Right:Shiko Miyake
Each of them gave a presentation about their work, explaining their thoughts on their work.
It was a very enjoyable experience and an opportunity to gain understanding, as some of the animals were different from what we had expected,
and some parts that we did not understand were solved.
We all walked around the planned locations of the wooden zoo in the village of Sandalino
